Foot Care Solutions

The best way to control the effects of lameness is to
prevent or control it rather than treating it when it occurs. Here are some tips for effective foot care and control of lameness:

Ensure cows feet are inspected regularly and trimmed
as necessary, preferably by a skilled operator. Create
cow-friendly passages and holding areas with non-slip surfaces. Reduce overcrowding in cubicles or loose housing.
Beds should be comfortable, clean dry and free from contamination. Keep stall bedding, alleyways, gateways
and all areas clean and dry. Foot baths are effective if
they are used and managed properly. Ensure cows do not have an excess intake of starchy foods as ruminal acidosis
can cause lameness. Select sires for breeding with good leg and feet scores for future genetic improvement.
