| The Holstein breed originated in the Netherlands almost 2000 years ago. Red and White Holsteins exist due to a recessive colour gene and are more prevalent in Europe than in the US, as US breeders tried to eliminate the red gene for many years.
Holsteins are the largest of the dairy breeds and are noted for their high milk production.
