The Piedmontese cattle originate from Northern Italy. The breed was first imported into the UK in 1988 and is now recognised as a terminal sire.
Cattle are early maturing and long living. Piedmontese cattle produce high value carcasses due to the meat potential and low percentage of fat. Piedmontese cattle have long bodies with straight, wide backs, deep chests and well-sprung ribs. The breed is not ideal for using on dairy cows, as it is not considered to be easy calving and the breed is low milk yielding which may discourage some suckler farmers from using the breed.
