The Charolais breed originated in Central France and was the first continental beef breed introduced into Great Britain. Charolais cattle are medium to large frame with a very deep, broad body.
Charolais is the leading terminal beef sire due to their superior growth ability and excellent conformation. The carcasses produced are of excellent quality with a high proportion of intra-muscular fat and a lack of subcutaneous fat making the meat more saleable. Bulls are noted for muscling with excellent loins, good hindquarters and deep second thigh. Females are less heavily muscled and have well-developed udders making them ideal for suckler replacements especially in lowland units. Charolais are often seen as the "added-value" breed within the beef sector. Charolais is a popular breed for dairy producers due to their excellent growth rates and conformation.
