NEW BEEF SIRE INDEX LEADS TO HIGHER PROFIT FOR FARMERS

Genus ABS are introducing a new beef sire index trait in their latest Beef sire brochure, launched in May. Calf Mortality index will determine how many more alive calves a bull could contribute to your herd.

This new symbol in the directory indicates to a farmer that the bulls have gone under the Genus ABS calving survey and proven that the sire produces more live calves after 48 hours, leading to higher profit for the farmer. Producing one live calf per cow every 365 days is every dairy farmer’s fundamental target and is directly related to dairy herd profitability. Failing to achieve this target is inefficient and a drain on profits.

With a current average market value of £250 a calf, beef cross dairy calves are a cash crop for dairy farmers.

Jocelyn Orr, Beef Brand Manager, says “By introducing calf mortality, we are giving our customers a truer value of how many more live calves our bulls are expected to produce. The greatest benefit of this new BSI is that a financial figure of benefit can be easily associated per extra calf produced”

By introducing this new index and indicating which bulls will give the highest number of live calves, lower mortality percentage and higher profit are expected for the farmer.
