The Genus ABS Profitable Long Life Cow of 2017 is announced!
Feizer Shottle Delia, owned by WA & A Booth from Austwick, Yorkshire was announced as the winner of the 2017 Genus ABS Long Profitable Life Cow Competition at the UK Dairy Day on Wednesday 13th September.
Feizer Shottle Delia EX 96 (7E) is the ninth winner of the prestigious Profitable Long Life Cow Competition. Born in 2002, she is currently giving 50 litres per day in her tenth lactation having already given over 120 tonnes of milk. She still lives in the cubicles with the rest of the cows. With high components, low cell counts and tight calving interval she has proven that she is a very profitable cow and a very worthy winner.
“The competition was created to celebrate cows that have made an outstanding lifetime contribution,” comments Genus ABS Cornerstone coordinator, Sally Thomasson. A subtle change has been made to this competition to include the word ‘profitable’ to ensure the winners have lived a long and profitable lifetime and not under-performing in later lactations just to achieve certain milestones. “There are many attributes which contribute to be a true profitable long lasting cow”. They are influenced by management systems; farm sizes, climatic conditions and different breeds. The competition does not just recognise the cow that has given the highest amount of milk or just the oldest cow. It also takes into account her components, fertility, age, health and welfare and how she compares with her herdmates. A breed correction factor is used to compare the seven dairy breeds that entered so they are evaluated on a level playing field. Breed winners are also recognised with a rosette and certificate.
“To a farmer, a Long Life Cow has different meanings and we received a variety of reasons why their cow should win the competition, some funny, some heart warming, but above all they expressed an obvious pride and joy to enter their cow for the competition. They show dedication coupled with supreme levels of stockmanship to look after their cows”, comments Sally
The competition is judged by a panel of judges from the different departments of the Genus ABS business and is open to all cows throughout the UK, not necessarily sired by Genus ABS genetics. This makes it a true open competition and one to be coveted. The regional and overall winners are chosen by an independent master judge. This year was the turn of Ayrshire and Holstein breeder Andrew Broadley from the Whitecroft herd in Derbyshire. His knowledge of different breeds was invaluable with the final decisions.
David Booth, commented on winning the prize at Dairy Day at Telford, “I am delighted to win this prestigious competition. Feizer Shottle Delia is an amazing cow that never puts a foot wrong. She’s extremely youthful for her age and has a fantastic temperament”.
Feizer Shottle Delia from the Northern region competed against three other regional finalists and was crowned the overall UK winner:
- South – Causeway Number 417, 12th lactation Holstein that has yielded over 142 tonnes of milk and held to first service 9 times,. Owned by Messrs Chinn, Shaftesbury Dorset.
