GENUS ABS LAUNCH ‘PROFITABLE LONG LIFE COW COMPETITION 2017’

Genus ABS announces the 2017 contest to find the most profitable long life cow is now underway!

Following the tremendous success of the Long Life Cow Competition over the last eight years, Genus ABS are continuing with the popular accolade and this year will be including more emphasis on the profitability of the animal over its lifetime.

“The Long Life Cow competition was created to celebrate cows that have made an outstanding lifetime contribution” comments Sally Thomasson Genus ABS Cornerstone Coordinator.  “There are many attributes that mean a cow will last longer and perform to its best. Our judging panel will review the health, fertility, profitable milk production and performance of the cow alongside her herd mates. The reasons why the farmer considers their cow to be the most Profitable Long Life Cow is also really important.  The best cows are often hard-working, fuss-free cows with little problems.  Last year we received a variety of reasons from farmers on why their cow should win the competition, some funny, some heart-warming, but above all they expressed an obvious pride and joy to enter their cow for the competition.”

The 2016 winner was Bradla Miranda 4, owned by Allan and Susan Throup & Sons from Higher House Farm in West Yorkshire.  Allan Throup said at the time he won the prize, “Bradla Miranda 4 gets no special treatment; she’s a very youthful, easy-to-manage cow.”

If you think you have a cow that deserves to be crowned the 2017 Genus ABS Profitable Long Life Cow Competition for 2017, please complete an entry form which can be acquired by:

The closing date for entries is Friday 18th August 2017.  The winner will be announced at the UK Dairy Day at Telford on Wednesday 13th September 2017.
