THE GENUS ABS LONG LIFE COW OF 2016 IS ANNOUNCED

Bradla Miranda 4, owned by Allan and Susan Throup & Sons from Higher House Farm, Silsden, West Yorkshire was announced as the winner of the 2016 Genus ABS Long Life Cow Competition at the UK Dairy Day on Wednesday 14th September.

“Bradla Miranda 4 is the seventh winner of the prestigious “Long Life Cow Competition” The competition was created to celebrate cows that have made an outstanding lifetime contribution,” comments Genus ABS Cornerstone Coordinator, Sally Thomasson. “There are many attributes which contribute to be a profitable long lasting cow”. This is influenced by management systems; farm sizes, climatic conditions and different breeds. The competition does not just recognise the cow that has given to highest amount of milk but also takes into account her components, fertility, age, health and welfare and how she compares with her herd mates. A breed correction factor is used to compare the seven dairy breeds that entered so they are evaluated on a level playing field.

“To a farmer, a Long Life Cow has different meanings and we received a variety of reasons why their cow should win the competition, some funny, some heart-warming but above all they expressed an obvious pride and joy to enter their cow for the competition. They show dedication coupled with supreme levels of stockmanship to look after their cows”, comments Sally

Past regional winner of the Long Life Cow Competition, Richard Pilkington from the famous Aintree herd accepted the role of independent Master Judge for this year’s competition. His knowledge of different breeds was invaluable with the final decisions.

Bradla Miranda 4 EX94 was born in February 2002 and is still going strong today. Having given over 100 tonnes of milk with a picture perfect udder she shows the youthful attributes of a cow half her age. Miranda was purchased by the Throup family from their cousin as part of a restocking programme and has lived all her life on the picturesque edge of the Yorkshire Dales. Following the announcement at the UK Dairy Day, Allan Throup said, “We nearly fell over when we released we were the winners of the Long Life Cow Competition. It’s such a fantastic achievement. What we love about this cow is that she is out grazing for as long as she can be throughout the year. She gets no special treatment, she’s a very youthful, easy-to-manage cow and we are lucky enough to have her twin daughters milking in the herd now. Our family motto is ‘breed as good as you can, feed as good as you can and the cows will keep improving.”

Bradla Miranda 4 competed against three regional finalists to be crowned the overall UK winner:

  • South – Goonhilly Zest Rose EX92, a 12th lactation Friesian/Holstein that grazes 10 months of the year and has yields up to 3.89% protein. Owned by Messrs Tripconey, Cornwall.
  • Central – Amber Lovely Lily EX90 28, a 15th lactation Shorthorn cow with a lifetime yield of 111 tonnes, owned by J Hole & Sons from Ashover, Derbyshire.
  • Northern Ireland – Ards Shottle Belinda EX94, 100 tonnes in 9 lactations with exceptional components, fertility and cell counts owned by Messrs Patton. Newtownards, Co.Down.

Each of the finalists received a glass trophy, certificate and rosette and Bradla Miranda 4 was presented with the coveted Long Life Cow Trophy.
