THE HUNT IS ON FOR THE LONG LIFE COW OF 2016

Following the tremendous success of the Long Life Cow competition, Genus ABS has launched their quest to find their Long Life Cow of 2016. Could this year’s winner be in your herd?

“The Long Life Cow Competition was created to celebrate cows that have made an outstanding lifetime contribution,” comments Genus ABS Cornerstone Coordinator, Sally Harper. “To a farmer, a long life cow has many meanings and we know there are many attributes which mean a cow will last longer. It’s likely she will get in calf regularly over several lactations and she will be a high producer with good compositional and hygienic milk quality. They are usually hard-working, fuss-free cows; most importantly they will be profitable

The 2015 winner was Lliwe Rosette 25 EX95, owned by B & V Davidson from Gretna, Scotland. Born in November 1998, Rosette was in her 11th lactation and had a lifetime milk yield of 152,196kg –With her outstanding conformation and exceptionally low cell count – averaging just 76 over her productive life, Rosette was a firm favourite with the Davidson family.

“The quality of entries we received last year really highlighted the durability of UK cows and the excellence of UK stockmanship,” Sally continues. “We look forward to identifying more Long Life stars this year.”

The closing date for entries is Friday 12th August 2016. The winner will be announced at the UK Dairy Day at Telford on Wednesday 14th September 2016.
